Email Marketing and Local Government
By Dan Forootan, President of EZ Publishing
For better or for worse, November is rapidly approaching. This year, that means the presidential election. And while we’ll all be inundated with campaign ads (most of them negative, of course), the truth is government is most impactful at the local level. So whether local politicians are running for office or not this fall, a presidential election is the best time to remind people of the difference-makers they have just down the road.
The problem, of course, is that local government doesn’t quite have the limitless budget of a Barack Obama or Mitt Romney! Indeed, most budgets barely have room for mass mailings, never mind the type of campaign that would keep local government in the forefront of the conversation. But what if there was a new marketing solution for local government that cost a fraction of what the old-fashioned method cost? Here are four reasons why email marketing for local government requires just a small investment in email marketing software yet can pay huge dividends in the end.
1.) The affordability cannot be matched.
As noted earlier, most local political races and political offices operate at a fraction of the budget of the bigger state and national races. Every cent counts, and there’s no better way to maximize value than by purchasing email marketing software. It costs little to buy and even less to implement, especially if a staffer has a computer-savvy intern willing to add overseeing the email marketing campaign to his or her duties.
2.) Share the message faster and with more people via social media
One way to engage local residents—especially younger ones—is to embrace the newest technologies. And there’s no better method of promoting email marketing for local government than with social media. Allowing each message to be shared on Twitter and Facebook will expand its potential audience by an immeasurable amount. Think about it this way: when someone forwards an email, it goes to one person. But someone sharing a link on Twitter or Facebook is sharing it with all his or her followers or friends.
3.) Local government email marketing is interactive.
Whether it is used for campaign purposes, or to keep constituents informed, email marketing for local government offers the type of interactivity no other method of advertising or marketing can match. Embedded video that can be watched in the body of the message provides a local government official plenty of options, from airing a campaign ad to airing footage of town meetings to showing him or her interacting with citizens.
4.) Directly reach the voters and townspeople!
Anyone who purchases email marketing software gets the chance to deliver the type of ‘direct hit’ that is impossible with what’s come to be known as old-fashioned marketing. Not only is the message delivered right to an inbox—where it’s more likely to be read than if it were placed in a newspaper or on a television ad—but the software can be customized to include personal greetings. It is difficult to reach voters and make government human these days, but email marketing for local government does it in a variety of cost-efficient ways!
